THIS WEEK'S ARTICLE: The Answer - What's the Question? Rob Parnell I bought a book by John Assaraf a few weeks back. John is one of the guys in The Secret - more specifically the one who made a vision board of his ideal house, only to find he was living in it a few years later. I remember seeing him interviewed about it on Oprah. The book is called The Answer, which he co-wrote with his business partner, Murray Smith. The book extends The Secret one step further - and takes up my tack (a few newsletter's back) where I suggested there was one missing ingredient to The Secret's teaching - that is, taking action. Interestingly, John and Murray outline three other laws that they say complement the Law of Attraction. I'll describe them here and their relevance to writers. First off: The Law of Attraction I think we all know this one by now. Simply put, as Mike Dooley says, your 'thoughts become things'. Good, positive thoughts attract good positive outcomes, duly provided by the Universe, through a kind of 'cosmic magnetism'. This is true. Rhonda Byrne managed to attract twelve million dollars using it - what more endorsement do you need? Seriously, if you don't think the Law of Attraction has any validity, then remind yourself of the opposite Law of Being a Miserable Scumbag, where being continually negative and depressing gets you more of the same. You know this much is true! So let's say that having a dream of yourself as a successful and wealthy writer is probably going to do you more good in the long run than an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. Okay? Then if you accept the Attraction Law, you're definitely going to need: The Law of Action This principle states that if you have a vision of a better version of you in the future, a more accomplished you with a back catalogue of writing behind you, it's probably a good idea to start doing something about it. No amount of wishing, visualization and positive emotion is going to write your books for you. You still have to take action - and write. Plan your books, learn and improve the necessary skills, write every day, submit your manuscripts. These are all crucial steps to your eventual success. If JK Rowling had only dreams and never actually sat down to write her books, there would never have been a Harry Potter phenomenon. Clearly the Law of Action is what makes the difference between wannabes and harnessing the power of the Universe to help you. Then, you ask, 'Yeah but how long is all this gonna take?' Good question. John has the answer: The Law of Gestation Think of this as a natural law. It makes sense. Nature shows us that nothing happens without the context of time. A fetus takes time to grow into a baby. An acorn takes time to grow into an oak tree. A page of scribble takes time to develop into a novel. We all have to learn and grow - to fulfill our potential. Nobody becomes a bestselling author without first learning the craft of writing, constantly getting better and putting his or her work out there. That's a given. It's natural - and if you want it enough, far more likely. The Law of Gestation should be a comfort to a writer. It means that rejection is part of the process - mere hurdles on the way to maturity and mastery of the craft. Aim to be the best writer you can be, a mighty oak, take positive and consistent action. Understand these things take time, but one day, when you're ready, you'll be recognized as the great wordsmith you intended to be. Because the final law is: The Law of Compensation You get what you focus on - no matter how long it takes. If you focus on being a great writer, even just a successful working writer, you will achieve that goal. And, get paid for it. The Law of Compensation means that all creators who find their niche, their passion, will receive financial rewards for using their talents to the best of their abilities. The Universe is not fickle if you truly know what you want. Nothing is impossible - if you believe in yourself. All you have to do is to find your passion. That's the real lesson contained within the Law of Attraction. Most people don't really know what they want. They try things halfheartedly. They wish, they wonder what it might be like... But they're not serious... If you want to write for a living, or express your creativity and get paid for it, you simply have to show the Universe, and yourself, that you are serious - and won't be put down or discouraged. Then, the world is your playground. And you will be rewarded. Keep Writing!
