2008 Winner - Writers Digest Best
Writer's Site Writers and Radio Interviews Rob Parnell You probably know - because I sent you an email yesterday - that I just had my radio interview with Vin Smith on the America First Network. I thought I might spend some time telling you about it - partly because many of my subscribers have asked how it went - and partly to let you know what it's like! Nerve-wracking would be the first word that comes to mind. For several hours before it I paced the house, having imaginary conversations with myself based on possible questions I might be asked. I called the Network two hours early to make sure I had the right number - and the right Pacific Time. I was in the garden when I realized I had to call. I called in one minute late - but that was okay, the intro music was still playing. A man's voice told me I was expected and could I hang on. I did until a hiss sounded and I could hear Vin talking - about me. He introduced me as "the greatest writing guru on the planet" and I nearly choked and hung up - but didn't! There was another guest too. Her name was a Jenny, a sports psychologist and radio host. In the course of the interview she also chatted and asked questions, which was all good. We talked mainly about the need for the writer to work without heeding too much criticism - either from our internal critic or from the people around us - especially writers - that sometimes feel the need to undermine our confidence. I stressed the importance of having mentors and supporters around you that made you feel good about your writing - rather than detract from your need to write. It was an interesting topic - one close to my heart - because I believe much of the Easy Way to Write philosophy is concerned with acquiring a positive writer's mindset through affirmations and practice - no matter what your level of expertise. We talked about my Easy Way to Write a Novel system - and how that helped writers get over the many barriers to writing success - time management, staying motivated and generally writing regularly for pleasure and self actualization. I forget the actual words I used. I talked as I do to friends in the pub - spontaneously and with no particular agenda. We also talked about movies, shrimp barbies and how English actors are so good at American accents! Vin's a great interviewer. He made me feel relaxed, set up the questions well so I had plenty of time to think through my answers - and I realized after, knew exactly what to ask in terms of my passions. We joked about all my freebies. Vin worried that I couldn't make a living giving away so much - and that maybe he should send me a care package. I assured him that wasn't necessary and that he should come to Adelaide. He said he'd like that so we could share a Guinness under the Australian Sun! After three quarters of an hour it was done. When I put the phone down, my hand hurt from gripping it so tightly. It left me on a high. My partner and my kids hugged me for doing such a good job and I spent the next hour winding down - and wondering if I could do more of these 'radio thingies' in the future. It was a great experience and if you ever get the chance yourself, to definitely do it. Writers may be shy and introverted for the most part but radio works well for that. You can be yourself - and you forget it's actually being broadcast. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know how it went. Best regards and keep writing!
