How Easy is Writing a Screenplay?
Rob Parnell
Short answer: much easier than writing a
novel!
I was inspired to write this article this
week because we've just got a new producer onboard to
helm another of our screenplays.
This one's a horror pic set in South
Australia - the story line is top secret at the moment
because the producer is going around getting money from
US distributors and local funding bodies - and they don't
want anyone to know about the (apparently) brilliant
concept!
It's weird. Robyn and I have been duly
submitting fiction manuscripts for years now - and taken
rejection from publishing houses as normal - par for the
course.
But oddly, with the film and television
industry, we keep getting surprised by the positive - and
quick - responses we receive.
And I think I know what's happening.
Basically, there's a HUGE demand for
writers of screenplays out there! The producers we speak
to say their constantly looking for writers - because the
demand for new drama is never ending.
What with movies, TV, cable, direct to
DVD, there are now crazy amounts of opportunities for
writers for the screen.
Now, you'd think that writers would be
clamoring to get into the film industry but apparently,
this is just not the case.
Most writers continue to plod along,
writing books and short stories which will never get
published when - right outside the door - there are
hungry film and TV producers desperate to see new
screenplays and TV scripts.
It's ludicrous when you think about it.
Just take me and Robyn as an example. Just
one year ago we pitched a 400 word treatment at Hollywood
- and Wolfgang Peterson's assistant was on the phone
within hours!
A couple of months later we sent a short
email to a movie producer pitching a story idea who then
paid us $$$s to write a script for a film that is now
going into production.
And this week, we're getting another
advance to write yet another movie!
At the same time as we're getting
rejections for books, the film industry has been
welcoming us with open arms.
Are you getting this?
Do you understand what I'm saying?
That maybe there's opportunities here for
YOU TOO!
Why go on suffering rejection from
publishers who treat you with contempt when there are
movie producers out there desperate for new writers - any
writers! YOU!
There's only one catch though: Format.
You have to present your ideas and or
material in the right way.
But hey, it's not hard to learn. And I can
teach you that, no problem.
In fact, I can teach you everything you
need to know about writing and selling screenplays -
quickly and easily:

And did I mention the money?
You simply won't believe how much you get
paid for screenwriting!
Outrageous amounts!
It makes traditional publishers look
positively penny-pinching!
