From Rob Parnell

Dear Fellow Writer,

Character is where all fiction starts. That's the accepted view. But is it really? Is there some other, more intuitive starting point that I can reveal to you?

I believe so - in the first module of "Character Creation", my all new fiction writing master class.

And is there a knack - a simple way - of coming up with compelling and memorable characters for your short stories and novels - even screenplays?

There is indeed - and I can reveal it to you in the second module of this fascinating new course on Character Creation.

But what about characters with intriguing depth that can support a series of stories - or fictional creations that can go on to become famous - as in, more famous that the author! Are there a tactics and techniques for developing characters and heroes over time?

Certainly - and I will show them to you in module three of this unique and fun exploration into the fundamentals of creating fictional characters.

You know me.

The most frequent compliment I receive is that I always deliver more than was expected - usually much more.

And this masterclass is no exception. In "Character Creation" I will lay bare all the arguments for and against the conventional theories - and then go further, exposing their positives - and some of their limitations - before moving further than any other 'writing guru' has ever gone before!

I'll take you through the entire process of character creation and idea development in a way that is instructional, fun and will, I hope, no doubt strike you as profound. That is my promise to you.

Here's what we'll discover together:

Character Creation, Module One: Purpose & Presentiment

Fictional characters are more than mere two dimensional cut-outs. Indeed, they are much more than people. In this module we discuss authorial integrity, moral purpose and personal involvement with fiction and how the author may use fiction as a vehicle for self expression and entertainment without compromising his/her moral sense and duty to seek the truth.

Character Creation, Module Two: Ideas and Inspiration

The age old question 'where do ideas come from' is answered. And it's not the conventional answer! I'll show you how to have an endless supply of ideas and how to turn each one into a helpful facet of your storytelling. We fully examine types of characters - archetypally and practically. Then we look at how a fiction writer uses description and 'show don't tell' to inform and entertain the reader with their characters.

Character Creation, Module Three: Design and Development

Once you have your characters, how do you develop them? In this module we look at depth, long lasting appeal and the truth behind serial characters. How do you retain consistency but achieve surprise? I teach you all the 'tricks of the trade' and give you more ideas on how to broaden your stories and reach new heights for literary and genre works.

Over three modules - and three weeks - I will present to you a veritable manual for character creation. One you may need to dip into for the rest of your writing life!
